Should there be a Mosque are Ground Zero? That is the biggest question surrounding the redevelopment of the World Trade Center Site. We seem to have forgotten all about how the various parties, both political and municipal, have botched the rebuilding of one of the most recognized icons in the modern world. Here we are 9 years later with nothing to show for forward progress but empty promises and a large hole in the ground.
The biggest issue is not the creation of a mosque near ground zero but about what is truly being built there and why at that site. We, as New Yorkers, all know that the largely Muslim community resides outside of Manhattan. So why build a Mosque so close to the site of the terrorists attacks on the United States committed by Muslims? It is because what is being built at Ground Zero is not a Mosque nor an Islamic cultural center but a Rabat.
In Islam each and every structure linked to the faith and its rituals has strict architectural rules and a specific function and character. There is no confusion as to their purpose or meaning. A Mosque is a one story building or gallery built around an atrium. Other structures such as harams, zawiyyahs, husseinyiahs and takiyahs, also obey this strict architectural rule set. With that in mind, how does this 13 story building fit in with the Islamic faith?
A Rabat is historically a point of contact at the heart of the infidel territory raided. Rabat’s consists of an area for prayer, eating, resting and most importantly facilities to train and prepare for future razzias or raids. Yes, the English word raid is derived from the Islamic word razzia. So it is truly shocking to see how a person who helps finance the Hamas is also an investor in the WTC Mosque site? For those of us that have been asleep the past 9 years. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 was nothing less than a raid or razzia. America got raided and now they are building a site inline with tradition to remind us and as a rallying point for future raids.
For years westerners have been in the capitals of the Muslims countries and now they are in our cities and using them to front operations back home. Let’s not forget where the 9-11 terrorists lived and trained before they took the lives of 3000 innocent people.
The larger issue here is still not the building of the purposed building but the Freedom of Religion in the United States. If the building is not built, Muslims across the world will have a rallying cry. America’s prejudice that has been carefully hidden behind laws and glass ceilings and protected by the wealthy and powerful will be front and center. Muslims know that if the building was being built by any other religion, from Judaism to Catholicism, there would be no controversy. So is belief in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution strong enough to withstand the coordinated attacks that are bound to come our way?
The greatest threat to this Country is not from an outside attacking force but from within. Weak and greedy, self indulgent individuals trying to make a fast buck. Don’t believe me just ask the people who trained the hijackers what they were more concerned with, making a fast dollar or the fact that they should have been more alert to as why a pilot would not want to learn to LAND an airplane.
A widespread tendency is to regard the fact that because a person can do a thing doesn’t always mean that they may do a thing. Just because you can yell “Fire!” in a crowded building does not mean you may yell “Fire!” in a crowded building. The most destructive aspect of our culture has been the evisceration of the middle ground that makes life beautiful and worth living. The erosion of values such as fairness, sympathy, taste, duty and loyalty to ones country should not relegated to Saturday Night stand-up comedy.
Maybe I am just crazy or maybe I am just living in the wrong era. You tell me.
